Monday September 26, 2016: Pre-conference workshops
8:00 AM - 8:30 AM Registration
Workshop 1: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Lean Product and Process Developmemt Basics
Durward Sobek, Montana State University, USAMore info
This one-day interactive session introduces participants to applying lean thinking upstream in the product lifecycle. Content will be organized around foundational principles, illustrated by examples from a number of renowned companies. Topics include the LAMDA cycle of learning; pull, flow and cadence in product / process development; set-based innovation; growing expertise for sustained innovation; and the chief engineer system. The workshop is designed specifically for newcomers to the community to help on-board them in the basic concepts so they can get the most from the main conference sessions. But it is also useful for people wanting to get a complete picture of lean product and process development as a system.
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Be able to define lean product and process development (LPPD).
- Understand the foundational principles of LPPD.
- See how the principles can be translated to action and how they work together to achieve the primary aims of new product development.
- Understand how companies can resolve the paradox of enhancing innovation while consistently introducing new products on schedule and under budget.
Durward K. Sobek II is a Professor in and Program Coordinator of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering at Montana State University, located in Bozeman, MT, USA. He holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, and an A.B. degree in Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth College.
Dr. Sobek has been researching lean product development and lean healthcare for nearly two decades, focusing on how organizations can increase their performance capacity through the application of lean principles. He is a co-founder of the Lean Product and Process Development Exchange, Inc., and has published numerous articles in publications such as Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. He is also co-author of two books: Lean Product and Process Development, 2nd edition; and Understanding A3 Thinking: A Critical Component of Toyota's PDCA Management System.
Workshop 2: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Advanced Lean Product Development
Peter Palmér and Norbert Majerus, LPPDE and Goodyear, Sweden and USA More info
In 2015, Norbert Majerus published his book "Lean-Driven Innovation, Powering product development at the Goodyear tire & rubber company". This impressive book is based on 10 years of hands-on experience of applying lean in the innovation context. In this one day workshop, he teams up with Peter Palmér, as well having a strong and practical background built while implementing lean at Scania product development in Sweden, to deliver a workshop for somewhat experienced lean PD practitioners that promises to deliver an experience based and practical view, built onto a solid theoretical foundation!
Beginning in 2005, Norbert has implemented a principles-based lean product development process at the three global innovation centers of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. For nearly a decade he has been Goodyear’s lean champion in research and development.Norbert, born and raised in Luxembourg, has a Master’s degree in Chemistry from the Universitaet des Saarlandes, Saarbruecken, Germany, and has worked most of the disciplines in the Goodyear innovation centers in Luxembourg and Akron. Norbert recently published his first book “Lean-driven Innovation", that was awarded with a Shingo Prize 2016 and he has spoken at many conferences in the USA and other countries.
Workshop 3: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Set-Based Integrated Innovation
Matic Golob, Lean Analytics Association More info
Focusing your product development process on knowledge leads to faster development of better products. In this workshop, Ron Marsiglio will take you through the principles of knowledge-based product development, and share his experiences implementing it at Teledyne-Benthos. Bob Melvin has been leading Teledyne Benthos engineering since Ron Marsiglio retired. He will share how knowledge-based product development has developed at Teledyne Benthos and Teledyne TapTone. You will participate in the 'Capturing the Customer Interest Market Study Exercise' and a 'How do you know what you don’t know Knowledge Gap Analysis Exercise.' Hear about how Testing, Check Sheets, and Set Based Design are used and practice in a 'Decisions Integration Event Exercise.'
Workshop 4: 8:30 AM - 12:00 Noon
Value Stream Approach for Lean Product Development
John Drogosz, Liker Lean Advisors. More info
Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is an important approach to understanding how valueis created and flows through a process – but does it apply to product development? John Drogosz will explain how VSM can (and should) be applied to PD. Learn the differences and adaptions to traditional VSM, the variants of VSM, and how to use a VSM approach to map decisions in your product development process. John will also share his learnings on how to use VSM to assist in the transformation of a PD organization.
Workshop 5: 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Limit Curves and Knowledge Visualization
Göran GustafssonMore info
Göran Gustafsson holds an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics. He has worked with research, product development and engineering education in academia as well as in industry in Sweden and abroad. His current research interests are lean product development in general, and the capture, generalization, presentation and reuse of data and other knowledge for product development purposes in particular.
